When the decision was made to fly from New York to Los Angeles, it was with a bit of apprehension that I booked the flight. If my other flights across the USA were anything to go by, this was going to be hell.
To top it off, I was flying with an airline company that I had never heard of. The online booking process for Frontier Airlines was seamless, but you can't judge an airline by their website. Some of these companies seem to spend more money on their social media techs than they do on their pilots, so I would have to wait to see if this was going to be a trip I would survive.
As a bonus, I did stop off at Niagara Falls to gaze across the border at Canada and get slightly drenched by the spray of the waterfalls before heading to the airport.
As with all airports I have been to during Covid, Niagara airport in Buffalo NY has strict rules on face masks and social distancing. Even with all of this, the check in at the desk and security check didn't take too long. It seemed as if the airport was scaled back in its operations so as not to be too busy, and within 30 minutes of arriving at the airport I was sitting in the departures area blissfully listening to my playlist.
Although the flight was slightly delayed, due to an electrical storm, the cabin crew assured us that we would make our connecting flight in Denver. The aircraft was an Airbus A320 and I was surprised at how clean and fresh the cabin looked. The seats looked brand new and were a good size with ample leg room. The cabin crew were courteous and although they constantly had to remind some passengers to keep their masks on, they did so in a gentle manner.
Once we had landed in Denver we had to walk quite briskly to catch our connecting flight to LA. I wish I had more time to explore this airport because it seemed quite lovely, but my name was already being called over the loudspeaker as I rushed to the gate. This flight was also on an Airbus A320 although it had a slightly alternative interior, though still just as comfortable and clean.
The flight arrived on time in Los Angeles and I had to wait for about 3 minutes at the carousel for my bag. It seemed like rush hour traffic when I stepped outside at midnight, but I was told that it was actually just LA on a normal day. I was collected and out of the airport within 5 minutes.
Altogether I have to say that these were the best flights I have had in America, and although I am aware that the airports are quieter due to Covid, everything ran smoothly despite the fact that both the flights were packed to capacity.
One drawback from being on a packed flight during this pandemic is that I am too scared to remove my mask to eat or drink while on the flight. So much for social distancing, but I guess the virus can't fly...
